The Global Citizens' Initiative (TGCI)
The Global Citizens’ Initiative is an international non-governmental organization (INGO) with members in 75 countries. We bring together people and organizations from across the planet to promote global values and help solve world problems. We define a global citizen as someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices.
Those of us who see ourselves as global citizens are not abandoning other identities; such as allegiances to our countries, ethnicities, and political beliefs. These traditional identities give meaning to our lives and will continue to help shape us. However, as a result of living in a globalized world we see we have an added layer of responsibility. We also are responsible for being members of a world community faced with problems that no single country by itself can solve. The major challenge that we have is to build a sustainable values-based world community that can solve the global issues we all face.
What might our community’s values be? They are the values that world leaders have been advocating for the past 75 years, including human rights, religious pluralism, gender equity, environmental protection, sustainable development, poverty alleviation, the prevention and cessation of conflicts between countries, the elimination of weapons of mass destruction, humanitarian assistance, and the preservation and celebration of cultural diversity.
When you become a member of The Global Citizens’ Initiative (TGCI) you are able to participate in the following activities that we sponsor.
Education and Training: Throughout the year TGCI sponsors a variety of teaching and learning activities designed to strengthen your ability to understand and address global issues in your community, your country, and across the world. Starting this Fall we will be sponsoring an online certificate course called What Every Global Citizen Needs to Know.
Global Networking: Once a member of TGCI you will be connected to other members in 75 countries. You will have the opportunity to get to know them, engage in joint problem-solving efforts, and develop cross-country projects on issues of mutual interest.
Advocacy: TGCI has three global advocacy groups that members can join and contribute to. OurHIV/AIDS Network is composed of 138 NGOs interested in improving the effectiveness of patient services for inadequately served populations.
Our World Schools Network seeks to promote the teaching of tolerance and the rehabilitation of primary schools that have been damaged by war, civil conflict, or extreme poverty. Our forthcoming Human Rights Victim Program will help support efforts to defend people across the world who have wrongly been accused of human rights violations.
The Amherst Declaration of Global Citizenship: TGCI members can participate in efforts to have people and organizations across the planet sign The Amherst Declaration; a statement of the values and principles of global citizenship. In 2014 we plan to present the Declaration to world leaders and the media as a sign of the growing worldwide interest in greater citizen engagement in global governance and international efforts to solve global issues.
