Partners In Health (PIH) is an international health organization relentlessly committed to improving the health of the poor and marginalized. PIH partners with local governments to build local capacity and works closely with impoverished communities to deliver high-quality health care, address the root causes of illness, train providers, advance research, and advocate for global policy change. 


PIH currently has implementation programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone and Navajo Nation. Through our partnership with Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we support a wide range of programs in dozens of other countries around the world.

The Manager of Grassroots Strategy will lead a Boston-based effort in building the movement for the right to health through PIH’s grassroots network of supporters. The primary vehicle for PIH’s movement-building work is the program “PIH Engage,” a network of volunteer community organizers who form teams across the United States. The Manager will craft yearlong campaigns that enable PIH Engage teams and others to amplify the work of PIH through fundraising, and education, advocacy efforts. S/he will contribute to discussion and convene with larger groups of stakeholders at PIH and allied organizations. Initially, the Manager will manage a coordinator, and, over time, may have the opportunity to grow the size of the staff.


Specific Responsibilities

Build and grow the operations of the PIH Engage grassroots network (70%)

  • Design and implement innovative online and grassroots fundraising activities for the PIH Engage network (primarily comprised of students and young professionals), taking the lead on peer-to-peer fundraising and facilitating collaboration/integration with the community engagement and community giving teams
  • Provide leadership to the PIH Engage Steering Committee and volunteers from around the network
  • Provide communications to grassroots network, with goal of mobilizing action from member base
  • Update and maintain PIH Engage’s online presence
  • Use/create reports to measure and share progress toward annual goals
  • Oversee training and coaching of volunteer community fundraiser/organizers


Support PIH’s policy and advocacy efforts (20%)

  • In collaboration with leaders of PIH’s strategy, development and communications functions, devise a grassroots advocacy platform to be implemented by the Engage network
  • When relevant, prepare written summaries of, and reports on, policy initiatives significant to Engage’s advocacy efforts
  • When relevant, support advocacy efforts by building coalitions with peer organizations
  • Work collaboratively across the organization, building strong relationships with colleagues to stay informed of latest organizational and field developments
  • Contribute to shaping PIH’s overall policy strategy, messaging, and advocacy tactics


Team Management (10%)

  • Define a long term vision for team structure and responsibilities, manage workloads and interactions with other departments and teams at PIH
  • Build and create development plans for staff; provide mentorship and identify training opportunities for staff
  • Manage a budget for PIH Engage, including the annual training institute, travel to grassroots teams, and supporting materials for activities

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; MPH or other advanced degree in fields of policy, health care, or business analysis preferred
  • Fundraising experience
  • Certification or training in community organizing skills and practices and/or significant experience   in national-level grassroots activism campaigns preferred
  • Ability to interact professionally with culturally diverse staff.
  • Commitment to global health and social justice, with knowledge of global health policy and legislation or the interest in developing such knowledge
  • Advanced organizational skills and capacity to handle multiple assignments and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative; able to easily adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Ability to effectively work on a team in a complex, fast-paced environment, with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated maturity and good judgment.
