Global Health Corps Fellow, Health Equity Fellow - Boston Public Health Commission

Role Overview:

The Health Equity fellow will advance health equity at the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and within the city of Boston through: 

  • Planning and implementing communications to explain the rationale and promote opportunities for engaging Commission staff and community residents in racial justice and health equity work. This will entail working on communication pieces for the Boston Public Health Commission’s Health Equity priorities including print, electronic, and social media
  • Supporting programs and public health service areas as they incorporate health equity assessment into processes
  • Participating in data collection and changing processes with external partners including city agencies, health institutions, and organizations addressing social determinants of health

The fellow will perform duties across all service areas within the Commission and with external organizations, under the supervision and guidance of the Director of the Office of Health Equity. Additionally, the fellow will interact closely with the Director of Communications, Director of Quality Improvement, and Director of Community Engagement and Partner Relations.


  • Develop marketing collateral (e.g., brochures, posters, newsletters, flyers, etc.) to educate Commission employees and the general public about the BPHC Health Equity and Racial Justice priorities, and their importance in improving public health in Boston
  • Write blog posts, social media content, and organizational updates that communicate the meaning of health equity and progress toward goals
  • Coordinate with the Commission’s Office of Communications to produce video presentations that convey the importance of our Racial Justice and Health Equity priorities that can be used to engage community partners and the general public at meetings and events
  • Participate in quality improvement processes that result in more equitable programs, services, and business practices at the Commission
  • Coordinate necessary data collection and meeting management on at least one externally facing committee to advance health equity and racial justice with external partners
  • Support the implementation of the Commission’s Community Engagement Plan which includes sharing stories of BPHC’s efforts to advance equity for all through its equitable and inclusive community engagement practices

Skills and Experience

Items indicated with an asterisk (*) are required 

  • Bachelor’s degree*'
    • Preferred: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in public health or communications
  • Experience managing social media accounts for an organization, e.g. Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram*
  • Excellent writing skills with experience writing briefs, news articles, issue papers, or related documents*
  • Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to understand and interpret quantitative and/or qualitative data*
  • At least one year of experience with project management including meeting planning and facilitating, taking notes and reporting and monitoring of progress*
  • Familiarity with the role of policy, environmental, and systems changes in health behavior change*
  • Intermediate or advanced skill in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher) and Internet Explorer* 
  • Experience creating marketing materials (brochures, posters, newsletters, flyers, etc.)
  • Experience producing video content
  • Proficiency in Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Chinese, Portuguese, or Haitian Creole
  • Ability to work effectively in a team approach to program management
  • Experience and excellent skills in working effectively with diverse community populations
  • Experience and excellent skills in group facilitation and working with broad-based coalitions
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize and to multi-task
  • Commitment to the role of public health in promoting social justice and health equity
  • Excellent social skills. Must be able to develop relationships within a complex and large public health organization
