Finance & Operations Manager (US) - Flying Kites

GENERAL SUMMARY: Flying Kites seeks an analytical, detail-oriented, and passionate Finance & Operations Manager (US) to join our US team, focusing on accounting and financial operations. This role is at the heart of ensuring the smooth running of our small, global organization.   • Bachelor’s Degree in business, accounting, finance or another relevant field

  • 5+ years experience working in finance, preferably for a non-profit organization or foundation 

  • Knowledge and high proficiency in computer applications, including GoogleSuite

  • Knowledge and high proficiency in QuickBooks

  • Excellent organizational, time management, and decision-making skills needed for a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to think critically and manage change in support of strategic growth and shifting priorities.

  • Excellent judgment, integrity and problem solving skills.

  • Team player who can multitask, prioritize effectively and adhere to multiple deadlines.

  • Self-motivated and results-oriented.

  • Ability to respond quickly and maintain composure under pressure

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion when making independent decisions

  • Accountable for the appropriate handling of confidential and sensitive information

  • Exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills.



  • Process all donations: Including checks, payouts from various donation platforms, and in-kind donations

  • Process all payments to vendors in US and Kenya

  • Manage relationship with Kenya-based accounting firm, bringing Director of Operations in when necessary

  • Manage US Audit

  • Support Kenya Audit

  • Support Director of Operations on annual budget preparation 

  • Support Director of Operations on quarterly revenue and expense reports and forecasts for Board of Directors

  • Bookkeeping

  • Manage organization’s financial dashboard

  • Monthly and quarterly organization-wide reconciliations 

  • Manage credit card spending, payments, and reconciliations

  • Develop and monitor revised US Financial Protocols 

  • Develop and monitor revised US Chart of Accounts 

  • Prepare budgets for grant applications and asks of individual donors 

  • Prepare budgets for grant reports and reports to individual donors 

  • Analyze and report on foundation giving history to support grant writer

  • Support Executive Director & Director of Operations on managing the organization’s investment account

  • Develop and monitor proper filing protocols for all financial reports / documentation (Including, but not limited to, final monthly requisitions, audit forms, reconciliations, documental of approval of out of budget expenses)

 Operations & Compliance 

  • Insurance: Renewal, upkeep, review of current policies and opportunities for improvements / efficiencies 

  • State Registrations: Renewal, upkeep

  • Organization accreditations: Guidestar seal of transparency, Charity Navigator, etc.

  • Payroll management

  • Health insurance management

  • Simple IRA management


  • Consistent with the management level of this position, some weekend and after-hours work is expected and required to meet organizational priorities.

  • Site visits to Kenya as may be required for the achievement of organizational goals and objectives.

  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned to support coverage for colleagues who are absent, on holiday or personal leave.
