Solidarity is a Verb: Voices from the HEAL Initiative
Since its founding in 2015, HEAL's two-year immersion fellowship program has built a community of over 150 healthcare professionals - over half of whom are from the Global South - working in 9 countries dedicated to serving the underserved as their lifelong choice. As the COVID crisis continues to surge around the world, the most vulnerable populations continue to be disproportionately affected, especially indigenous communities and communities of color. For the past five years, the HEAL Initiative (Health, Equity, Action, Leadership) has been working in the Navajo Nation, with 52 Native and non-Native health workers. At the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, HEAL and UCSF sent a total of 40 physicians and nurses to further support the surge of COVID-19, working across the 5 largest hospitals serving Navajo patients.
We must center the voices of the most impacted communities and health professionals if COVID is going to be a portal into a more just world. We hope you join us to hear from HEAL Fellows on equity, solidarity, and the ongoing injustice of health disparities in Navajo Nation and around the world.
