"Immigrant Youth and Achievement: The Messy Stories of Access"
In this talk, I will share research from a long-term ethnography exploring immigrant youths’ access to capital within various societal institutions, paying particular attention to how factors such as gendered family roles, transnational forms of capital, and documentation status interact dynamically. The presentation will address, although not necessarily answer the following questions: What societal factors effect immigrant youths’ footholds to achievement? How does education frame immigrant youth and how does relate to achievement outside of schooling? What are avenues to creating opportunities for immigrant youth to access capital without being assimilated?Brief Bio:Dr. Lisa Patel Stevens is an Associate Professor of Education at Boston College, with four ongoing years of ethnographic and action research with recently immigrated youth in the Boston area. Prior to working in the academy, she worked as a policymaker, educational consultant and secondary school teacher.
